Description

Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum is one of Europe’s oldest art museums. The museum, whose current building was completed in 1866, also has connections with a larger family of European museums in its current architectonic form; it was designed by the German architect Friedrich August Stüler, originator of the Neues Museum in Berlin, which in turn derived from Friedrich Schinkel’s Altes Museum. The building now houses painting and sculpture made before 1900 – twentieth-centruy art moved to its own museum in 1958 – as well as one department for applied art and one for prints and drawings. The selection of masterpieces in the Nationalmuseum described in this book provides an introduction to this extensive and important collection.
