Description

Published in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the Newark Museum, this fully illustrated book highlights the extensive and diverse collections of New Jersey’s largest museum. The Museum’s distinguished art collections are international in scope and span 6,000 years, from antiquity to the present day. The Museum boasts the most significant historical collection of Tibetan art in the Western hemisphere, including a Buddhist altar consecrated in 1990 by the Dalai Lama, as well as collections of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indian and Southeast Asian art. The American art collection is one of the finest in the country and includes Colonial portraiture, a superb selection of Hudson River School landscape paintings, folk and outsider art, a significant holding of works by African-American artists and major works of modern and contemporary art in all media. The African art collection includes masks and other sculpture, ceramic vessels, dress and adornment, as well as photography, painting and video art. Collections of ceramics, glass, silver, jewellery, furniture and textiles comprise the extensive decorative arts collection. Ancient art is also well represented, with objects from Egypt, the Near East, Greece and Rome. In addition to its comprehensive art collections, The Newark Museum also features the natural sciences. This handsome volume will be of interest to all visitors to the Museum and all those interested in art from around the world.
