Description
Giovanni Battista Moroni is considered one of the great portraitists of 16th-century Italy. Published to accompany the first major exhibition devoted to the artist in the United States, this sumptuous volume celebrates the painter’s eye for exquisite detail in depicting his sitters’ interior and material worlds. In-depth studies of Moroni’s most arresting portraits, together with a selection of complementary objects – jewellery, textiles, armour and other luxury items – evoke the material world of the Renaissance society in which he moved. Thirty-seven entries and two illuminating essays provide new insight into the artist and his sitters and reveal Moroni’s creativity in translating their world into paint.
