Description

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, a major international venue for modern and contemporary art, has a 148-year tradition of taking risks in collecting and exhibiting the art of its time. This commitment has given rise to one of the world’s most extraordinary collections of art, which includes works by renowned artists such as Francis Bacon, Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Jennifer Steinkamp, Robert Therrien, and Andy Warhol. In this sumptuously illustrated handbook, Curator of Education Mariann W. Smith takes a thematic approach that complements the overall curatorial approach of the Gallery, presenting well-known masterworks of the modern era alongside works by the most exciting and influential artists working today.

Author information

Mariann W. Smith, Curator of Education at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, joined the Gallery’s Education Department in 1987, serving as Curator since 2001. She has presented numerous lectures and written extensively about the Gallery’s Collection in a variety of formats and contexts. Louis Grachos, Director of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, is well known in the contemporary art world as a groundbreaking curator and a forward-thinking arts administrator. He has played a pivotal role in facilitating major collaborative exhibitions and events-such as the International Biennial at SITE Santa Fe and Beyond/In Western New York – and major audience development and educational initiatives in both Santa Fe and Buffalo. Douglas Dreishpoon, Chief Curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, has worked in museums for more than twelve years. He has organised many exhibitions of the work of many contemporary artists, including, most recently, Petah Coyne, Robert Mangold, and Guillermo Kuitca. His essays and reviews have been published in numerous catalogues, magazines, and journals, including Art in America, Art Journal, Art News and Sculpture.
