The only museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to historic and contemporary design. Founded in 1897 by Amy, Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt - grandaughters of industrialist Peter Cooper - it has been a branch of the Smithsonian since 1967. The Museum is housed today in the magnificent Fifth Avenue mansion built by Andrew and Louise Carnegie in the early 1900s. This richly ilustrated book celebrates this remarkable building, designed by Babb, Cook & Willard, and its new function as a major art space.
