DESCRIPTION

Bristol Cathedral is something of a hidden gem, with the twelfth-century monastery still visible in the Chapter House and Abbey Gatehouse. Pevsner wrote that the medieval hall church at the east end was ‘superior to anything else built in England, and indeed Europe at the same time’. The cathedral has many other exquisite points of interest, including glass, memorials, roof vaults, rampant monkeys and ammonites; and the Anglo-Saxon ‘Harrowing of Hell’ stone is proof of an ancient Christian presence in the area. This guidebook offers a concise history of the building followed by a tour of its highlights, and is beautifully illustrated throughout.
