Coventry is a phoenix of a building; a living, breathing reminder of the enduring power of humanity. Reduced to rubble during the Blitz, it was rebuilt according to modern aesthetics, an immovable concrete structure with swooping steel beams and fractured glass windows. The cathedral has since been described as Britain’s favourite twentieth-century building and it’s easy to see why it is so beloved. Basil Spence, the architect, seamlessly brought together the old and the new, incorporating the ruins into the new design. Inside, you’ll find Graham Sutherland’s magnificent tapestry of Christ in Majesty, John Piper’s great Baptistery window and – most importantly – the enduring presence of believers, drawn to Coventry as a place of pilgrimage.
