DESCRIPTION

This gloriously illustrated and accessibly written visitor's guide celebrates the wonderful cathedral church of Exeter, one of the most consistent and coherent examples of the Decorated Gothic style that survives today. The cathedral was largely built in a relatively short burst of intense activity from 1270, with just the imposing Norman towers retained from the earlier period. The nave was begun in 1310, and the monumental pulpit dates from that time, while the stonework of the windows, completed in the 1330s, is considered to be the best example of the period and the magnificent façade, with its sculptured figures, is the glory of the West front.
