The Clitheroe Castle Museum complex was officially opened in June 2009 by His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester, following one of the most exciting and ambitious heritage redevelopment projects in the north-west. This generously illustrated and handsomely designed handbook guides the visitor round the museum collections, the castle keep itself and the surrounding park, which combine to form Clitheroe’s War Memorial. Clitheroe Castle Museum’s wide-ranging collections include galleries devoted to the geological past and the formation of the surrounding landscape; wildlife past and present; human habitation, from the earliest nomadic Palaeolithic peoples through Roman and medieval agriculture to the industrial development that transformed the region; myth and legend; and the history and development of the Castle itself. The Clitheroe Castle Museum complex is owned by Ribble Valley Borough Council and is run by Lancashire County Museum Service.
