DESCRIPTION

Examines the artistic legacy of Claude Monet and the lasting impact of his legendary gardens at Giverny, which continue to attract and inspire artists today. The juxtaposition of Monet's paintings with other interpretations of the gardens reveal a century-long lineage of artistic experimentation and creativity by both Monet's American contemporaries and the postwar artists who rediscovered the unique place first cultivated by the legendary Impressionist. Included here are key paintings Monet created during the years he lived in Giverny until his death there in 1926. Monet's significance as a revolutionary modernist, highlighted by these important works, has been honored by recent generations of painters who travelled to Giverny to work within the garden's walls. With painting, sculpture, photography, and video, contemporary artists continue to reinterpret Giverny through diverse postmodern perspectives, and in so doing, celebrate the Impressionist master's vanguard spirit and his place in history.
