Launch of Cathedrals of the Church of England JUNE 2015

A personal guide to all 42 cathedrals of the Church of England

Cathedrals of the Church of England, the latest title in Scala’s popular Director’s Choice series, is launched today, 16 June, at Worcester Cathedral and next week on 23 June at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Janet Gough, Director of the Cathedral and Church Buildings Division of the Church of England, offers a unique and personal insight into all 42 of England’s cathedrals. Having spent the past twelve months visiting all the cathedrals that she and her colleagues support, she has compiled a collective portrait of this extraordinary living heritage.

Gough captures the unique character of each cathedral, focusing on the most intriguing aspects of each, whether its history, architecture, treasures or music. As well as recounting the central role of cathedrals in English history, including the dramatic stories of the murder of Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral and the recent interment of Richard III at Leicester, Gough also notes the continued importance of cathedrals in communities today. She writes: ‘Everywhere I’ve been struck by the huge activity and energy in our cathedrals today’.

The striking photographs that accompany Gough’s brief pen portraits, including some specially commissioned images by Paul Barker, give a further sense of the unique character of each building.

This small format book is the perfect companion for visitors and armchair travellers alike.
