Acclaim for 'Picturing Mary' DECEMBER 2014

Roundup of early review coverage

The exhibition Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother Idea opened at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC, on December 5, and has been attracting plenty of media coverage. Scala has published the accompanying catalogue.
Wall Street International hails 'a landmark exhibition … bringing together masterworks from major museums, churches and private collections in Europe and the United States'.
The National Catholic Register acclaims 'a remarkable assortment of beautiful sacred art', while noting that 'even for the nonbeliever, the depictions of Mary reveal the concerns of the time, the sensibilities of the artist, the fashion of the day and the debates within the Church about particular aspects of the faith at that time.'
National Geographic features an interview with Melissa R. Katz, a contributor to the book, who observes that there is no other image of a woman that can take us through 16 centuries of art, pointing out her importance to Christianity, Judaism and Islam -- as well as feminism.
Both the Financial Times and Huffington Post have a gallery of images from the show. Meanwhile the museum's blog has a feature on the catalogue.

The show continues until April 12, 2015.
