Sherborne Abbey guidebook launch MARCH 2014

The guidebook to Sherborne Abbey launches

The Sherborne Abbey guide was launched on a glorious sunny day after the Sunday morning service on March 9th. After a reception with wine in the Lady Chapel, the assembled guests were invited to sit in the nave. Against a backdrop of the Abbey’s glorious medieval chancel and Great East Window, the Vicar of Sherborne, Eric Woods, congratulated Scala for the quality of the publication and their patience – it is eight years since the previous chairman of the Friends, John Shirley, started to investigate replacing their previous guidebook.  The Vicar also paid tribute to the author Huw Ridgeway, for his accessible and informative text, to local photographer Jayson Hutchings for the sparkling images and to William Christopher, current Chairman of the Friends, for his hard work heading up the publication committee. Huw then gave a witty, self-effacing speech in which he paid special tribute to the author of the previous Abbey guide, JHP Gibb FSA, whose work survives in the attractive artistic reproduction of the medieval monastery prominently featured in the new guide.
